How Do Cats Age: 6 Stages of a Cat’s Growth

Cats are known for their grace, agility, and long lifespan compared to other pets. However, as they age, they go through different stages. The journey from kitten to cat is exciting.

Understanding the aging process in cats can help you provide better care for your furry friend and ensure they live a comfortable and happy life.

Cats Experience Physical Changes

Kittens start out with both their eyes and ears closed. But as they progress all their senses develop. When they grow older, they still experience numerous changes. These occur their entire lives.

From the Growing stages to aging, most cats have a long and happy life.

6 Stages of a Cat’s Growth

  1. Newborn (0-2 weeks): During this stage, kittens are completely dependent on their mother for nutrition and care. They are unable to see or hear, but they have a strong sense of smell and touch.
  2. Early infancy (2-8 weeks): Kittens’ eyes and ears start to open, and they begin to explore their surroundings. They start to play with their littermates and develop socialization skills.
  3. Juvenile stage (8-12 weeks): This stage is characterized by rapid growth and further development of motor skills and social behavior. Kittens start to play rough and engage in mock fights.
  4. Adolescence (3-6 months): During this stage, kittens become more confident and adventurous. They start to test their boundaries and may become more aggressive.
  5. Adulthood (1-7 years): At this stage, cats reach physical and sexual maturity and become fully independent. They may also develop their own unique personality traits.
  6. Maturity (7 years and up): As cats age, they may start to slow down and become more relaxed. They may also develop health issues associated with aging and require more medical attention.
